In an Olympic campaign, the Strength & Conditioning Coach plays an essential role.
It is not just about being in shape on race day: performance depends on the ability to remain strong, enduring, and adaptable throughout an entire week of competition… in changing and sometimes extreme weather conditions.

Throughout my career, I have seen physical preparation become a central pillar of Olympic sailing.
Here is why this role has become so strategic — and how it helps shape a complete athlete.

1. Physical Preparation: A Major Turning Point in Olympic Sailing

For a long time, sailing focused primarily on technique and tactics.
But with the evolution of boats, racing formats, and performance demands, everything changed:

physical conditioning became a decisive factor in performance.

Today, the Strength & Conditioning Coach designs tailor-made programs to:

      • build endurance

      • develop functional strength

      • improve mobility

      • optimize recovery

      • prevent injuries

This evolution has transformed how sailors approach their profession: being strong, mobile, explosive, and precise has become essential.

2. The Specific Physical Demands of Olympic Sailing

Each Olympic class has its own “physical code.”
Changing boats often means changing your body.

When I moved from the Laser to the Finn, I had to gain 13 kg of mass — a huge transformation to achieve quickly and safely.

The Finn required a rare combination of:

      • strength

      • endurance

      • agility

      • the ability to mobilize power on an unstable boat

Proprioception training, core strengthening, back reinforcement, and injury prevention were essential to withstand:

      • hiking

      • pumping loads

      • prolonged postures

Without a Strength & Conditioning Coach, this transformation would have been extremely difficult to manage.

3. Curiosity and Immersion: Key Qualities of a Great Strength Coach

The Strength & Conditioning Coaches who supported me originally came from… rugby and judo.
None of them came from sailing.

And yet, their fresh perspective became a real advantage:
they went out on the water, observed, tested, questioned, and learned.

This immersion allowed them to design training sessions perfectly adapted to the unique constraints of Olympic sailing.

It is a powerful reminder:

Performance often emerges from cross-disciplinary thinking, curiosity, and openness.

Training alongside Stade Rochelais rugby players taught me the rigor of strength training.
Discovering boxing brought explosiveness, coordination, and mental engagement.

In return, I shared my expertise in:

Today, each training session can be:

      • measured

      • filmed

      • analyzed

      • modeled

GPS, sensors, trackers, apps, load analysis…
Technology now allows us to understand the athlete with unprecedented precision.

It makes it possible to:

      • fine-tune training programs

      • monitor fatigue

      • prevent injuries

      • make better decisions

But despite all these tools:

👉 nothing replaces the human eye
👉 nor the listening skills of the Strength & Conditioning Coach

High performance remains a subtle balance between science and sensations.
